Prospective Students

Our mission is to train pediatric residents to provide excellent and quality healthcare to all children, especially the underserved. The Community Pediatric Residency Program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares pediatricians for meeting the demands of contemporary pediatric practice. Emphasis is placed on development of primary care pediatricians who have acquired their knowledge, skills and competencies predominatly through commuity-based learning experiences. This is a very novel approach as our residents gain a significant amount of experience in the community as opposed to traditional residency programs that may focus more on the hospital environment. The program allows residents the opportunity to explore the many facets of pediatric care in the 21st century.

Is Pediatrics for You?
The American Academy of Pediatrics describes the special attributes of Pediatrics: "Pediatrics is a specialty of remarkable scope, flexibility and diversity. Pediatricians promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being of children from birth to young adulthood. They care for young people in every stage of development, in good and in compromised health. They must carefully consider the constant barrage of medical, social, and environmental influences that affect children and their families.

Physicians who care for children and adolescents from birth to age 21 must employ intellectual agility and diagnostic acumen. Because their patient population represents the nation's evolving demographic profiles, pediatricians are continually reminded that inaccurate assumptions may negatively affect preventive health messages or treatment instructions. For these reasons, pediatricians evaluate each patient in the context of the family system and social environment and work closely with professionals in education, social services, and public policy areas.

Pediatricians are continually motivated by these opportunities and the personal and professional latitude they provide. Individuals who believe that a career should offer a sense of purpose, flexibility and engagement will enjoy the pediatrician's freedom to investigate options and contribute to the well-being of future generations. These opportunities only grow in value when coupled with the inestimable rewards of comprehensive, longitudinal patient care."

If the profile of a pediatrician matches your career and personal goals, then we'd love to take a closer look at you! Feel free to review our online brochure for more detailed information on our program.

Resident Schedules

In keeping with the commitment to general pediatrics, a significant portion of the residency training is devoted to the ambulatory experience. This includes assignments in community practices, emergency care, subspecialty, developmental/behavioral, adolescent experiences, and other community-based experiences.

Residents will participate in a core set of subspecialty rotations including hematology / oncology, adolescent medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and pulmonology. It is expected that the subspecialty rotations will complement the community-based generalist curriculum. Each of these specialties has several offices located in and around metro Atlanta, as well as hospital privileges.

Call
Residents take call every fourth night while on the inpatient rotations. On ambulatory rotations, the call is a total of 4-6 nights per month. There are approximately 5 call free months in the 3 years of training.

Continuity Clinic
Residents attend continuity clinic at a variety of different sites: Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding, West End Medical Center, and private pediatricians' offices. These community organized and managed practice locations are well established in the diverse neighborhoods, with each providing care in their respective communities in excess of 30 years.
