About Us

Our mission is to train pediatric residents to provide excellent and quality healthcare to all children, especially the underserved. The Community Pediatric Residency Program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares pediatricians for meeting the demands of contemporary pediatric practice. Emphasis is placed on development of primary care pediatricians who have acquired their knowledge, skills and competencies predominatly through commuity-based learning experiences. This is a very novel approach as our residents gain a significant amount of experience in the community as opposed to traditional residency programs that may focus more on the hospital environment. The program allows residents the opportunity to explore the many facets of pediatric care in the 21st century.

Since July 2001, cohorts of six interns have been admitted to the Morehouse School of Medicine Community Pediatric Residency Program each year. Our program emphasizes ambulatory primary care training in carefully selected community settings. This unique design prepares residents to be quality primary care providers, as well as, leaders in advocating the healthcare needs of their communities.

A Community-Centered Pediatric Training Program
Graduates of the Morehouse School of Medicine Community Pediatric Residency Training Program are expected to become excellent clinicians who also appreciate the impact of community-based influences on children's healthcare. The final product of this training experience will be an exceptional clinician who is well-equipped to adapt to the rapidly evolving dynamics of healthcare. Pediatricians trained in this program will possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to assume leadership positions in their communities, whether they choose to pursue private practice, fellowship, research, or academic medicine.

In keeping with the commitment to general pediatrics, a significant portion of the residency training is devoted to the ambulatory experience. This includes assignments in community practices, emergency care, subspecialty, behavioral/development, adolescent medical experiences and other community-based experiences.

Residents will also participate in a core set of subspecialty rotations including, but not limited to, hematology/oncology, adolescent medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases and pulmonology. It is expected that the subspecialty rotations will complement the community-based generalist curriculum. Each of these specialties has several offices located in and around metro Atlanta, as well as hospital-based practices.

Mission

The Morehouse School of Medicine Community Pediatric Residency Training Program is committed to training excellent clinical pediatricians with an expertise in community-based health delivery and advocacy, aimed at promoting life-long health habits that decrease health disparities in geographically, racially and economically disadvantaged populations.

Goals

  • To provide residents with skill in the practice of pediatrics that is community-oriented and
    community-based
  • To assist residents in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to promote optimal health
for our families and to manage the full range of pediatric illnesses
  • To develop pediatricians who are sensitive to the unique challenges of families in the underserved
    communities
  • To assist residents in developing skills using new technologies critical to the emerging practice of
pediatric medicine, including evidence-based medicine, PDAs in health care, Internet-based case logs, and
    electronic medical records
  • To develop a cadre of pediatricians with an expressed commitment in serving the primary health care
    needs of the medically underserved
  • To develop pediatricians who practice with the highest regard for ethics, cultural competence, and
    professionalism

Program Leadership

The Morehouse School of Medicine Community Pediatric Residency Program is uniquely designed to keep pace with a changing medical climate. In addition to traditional hospital-based learning, a significant portion of the resident's training will be community-focused and community-based. We strongly believe that these community-learning experiences are vital in training highly qualified pediatricians to deliver healthcare to our nation's children.

As medical technology advances, healthcare is shifting away from inpatient and tertiary care settings towards ambulatory and primary care. It is our conviction that the Community Pediatric Residency Program at Morehouse School of Medicine will serve as a training model for the development of a complete and well-rounded pediatrician who is well-qualified to face the challenges of healthcare delivery in the new millennium.

It is expected that the graduates of the Community Pediatric Residency Program at Morehouse School of Medicine will be motivated to serve the medically underserved pediatric populations. Due to the innovative nature of the training program, graduates will also feel equally adept in choosing a career in public health, academia or medical practice in urban and rural medically underserved communities.
